The trees at Rippon Lea are an important part of the Estate’s history, with some dating back to the 1880s. This walking tour provides a fascinating insight into the work required to manage and nurture this magnificent collection for the enjoyment of today’s visitors and future generations.

Rippon Lea Estate is an oasis and important biodiversity hotspot in the heart of suburbia. Spread across 14 acres the Estate’s beautiful trees give structure to the garden and provide a perfect setting for the Mansion. The treescape – which includes specimens of Algerian Oak, Moreton Bay Fig, Dutch Elm and Bunya Pine planted in the 1880s – is part of the legacy of Sir Frederick Sargood, Rippon Lea’s original owner. It is a living collection which is just as important to the history and enjoyment of the Estate as the buildings and furniture. Rippon Lea’s trees play their part in a bigger picture too: helping to keep our environment liveable, healthy and clean.

Join a member of Rippon Lea’s fabulous garden team for a walk through the stunning grounds, and unearth what it takes to maintain Rippon Lea’s magnificent living collection. Learn about some of the challenges faced in balancing the needs of the collection whilst also addressing the requirements of the individual trees.

This event is being held as part of the 2024 Australian Heritage Festival (Victoria)
