Working class people, especially women, until recently have been hidden from written history and their clothing has been overlooked, or subject to only generalized terms.  What they wore also remained under-represented in museums due to a low survival rate caused by the thrifty reuse of clothing or worn-out condition, and the tendency of museums to collect and preserve elite fashions rather than utilitarian clothing.

A fascinating exhibition organised by the Burnside Branch celebrating an under-represented aspect of fashion in many museums – the clothes working class women wore.
