Playing their Part – The Women behind the Governors, 1788-1855

Hear the stories of the famous and sometimes forgotten 17 women - the wives, daughters, nieces, cousins and mistresses associated with the first 10 Governors of the Colony.

Not all of them came to Australia but most who did, lived in Parramatta, some only visiting for a short period while others are here permanently.

Whether they were younger or older, weak or strong, rich or lowly, attractive or plain, tolerant and accepting, sometimes independent and passionate, let’s shine the spotlight on these women to appreciate their assistance to the Governor and the whole Colony.
