Laser cut printmaking from the archives (16+years)

Unearth hidden histories with the City of Sydney Archives in this workshop. Explore archival images and transform them into laser-cut prints. With guidance from experts at Darling Square Library, create a relief plate and print to take home while gaining insight into archival research & printmaking.

This event is offered as part of Heritage Festival 2025. The theme is ‘Unearthed’, looking at bringing to light lesser-known histories and stories, and unearthing knowledge. Take this opportunity to unearth the City Archives’ vast collection of historical images. Then connect with your creativity to produce a masterpiece!

Led by experienced facilitators in the Darling Square Library makerspace, this workshop is a great introduction to laser-cut printmaking and the City of Sydney Archives.

You’ll be guided through how to access historical images from the City Archives to make a laser-cut relief plate. Once you’re happy with your final design, we’ll help you print it on our small press.

What you’ll learn:

– How to access photographs in the City of Sydney Archives
– Preparing your images for print using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (no prior experience necessary)
– Basic laser cutting and printmaking skills
