Unearthed – A unique Chinese Kiln

An on site display of photos from the archaeological dig, with the archaeologists on hand to answer your questions about the site, its history, and the artefacts found there.

In 2005 during fencing work at Peppergreen Farm a chance discovery was made of the remains of a long forgotten brick making kiln built in 1859 by A’Fok, Fok Sing & Co near the Ironbark Chinese Camp in Bendigo. It was in use until the 1880’s when the site became a Chinese market garden, now known as Peppergreen Farm. An archaeological dig followed the discovery. It was re investigated in 2012, and then reburied to protect it. Built and operated by the Chinese to a traditional design, and producing small grey bricks not seen elsewhere in Australia, the kiln is thought to be unique outside of China. A number of artifacts relating to the life of the Chinese at the site were found during the excavations. The fascinating history of the kiln site and area over the years and the archaeological ‘digs’ will be shown in a photographic display on site at Peppergreen Farm, with archaeologists present to talk about it and answer your questions. The site is on the Victorian Heritage Register.
