Louisa Lawson History Talk with Michelle Scott Tucker

If the surname rings a bell, it should—the poet Henry Lawson is a name many of us know. But the real trailblazer in the family was his mother, Louisa Lawson (1848-1920). Louisa was an Australian poet, farmer, writer, publisher, suffragist, and feminist and a long-time Marrickville resident.

Join Michelle Scott Tucker, author and State Library of NSW Visiting Scholar, as she discusses how Louisa emerged from a life of rural poverty to become one of Sydney’s most talked about women.

About the Author:
Michelle Scott Tucker is the author of Elizabeth Macarthur: A Life at the Edge of the World (Text Publishing, 2018), a biography of the Anglo-Australian colonist who established the Australian wool industry. Michelle is a 2024 Visiting Scholar at the State Library of NSW, studying the Louisa Lawson papers. Michelle’s biography of Louisa Lawson is scheduled to be published, also by Text, in 2027.
