Courtroom Dramas

Step into Liverpool’s dark past with Rachel Franks as she uncovers tales of crime and punishment. Explore the historic Liverpool Courthouse, where criminals and their victims faced justice for over a century.

The former Liverpool Courthouse has been undergoing refurbishment since 2021 and finally visitors will be able to see the completed works. The early colonial authorities keen to ensure the symbols and systems of law and order expanded as new settlements were founded across New South Wales. This can be seen in the history of the Liverpool Courthouse which, dating back to the 1820s, is one of the oldest buildings in the area. This talk focuses on some of the stories that unfolded within what is now known as an important heritage building, but one that for over a century heard the stories of criminals and their victims.

Speaker, Dr Rachel Franks is Coordinator, Education & Scholarship at the State Library of NSW, an Honorary Associate Lecturer at the University of Newcastle with a PhD in Australian Crime Fiction, and author of ‘An Uncommon Hangman: The Life and Deaths of Robert “Nosey Bob” Howard’.
