Stirk Family Cottage 1881

Discover the charm and history of this hand-built cottage with authentic furnishings and artifacts. This beautifully preserved cottage offers a unique glimpse into the past, showcasing the lifestyle and architecture of the late 1800's.

As you explore the cottage, you’ll be transported back in time, surrounded by authentic furnishings and artifacts that tell the stories of the Stirk Family who lived there. Frederick and Elizabeth Stirk were the first family to settle in the Kalamunda township. The cottage is built with timber and clay taken from their surrounding land and lovingly constructed by hand and saw. The timber shingles are still in place above the hessian covered ceiling. The four roomed cottage was home to all eleven of the Stirks’ before a second house was built nearby to accommodate the growing family. Nestled in the South-East corner of Historical Stirk Park, named after the family, has a picturesque picnic area and playground to enjoy. We are giving away postcards of early Kalamunda throughout the festival.
