Ulva Cottage

A two bedroom cottage, one of the earliest built in Penola.

Built between 1850 and 1869, this cottage is one of the earliest in Penola.

Part slab construction, it has an exterior of vertical sawn timber, a simple corrugated iron roof skillion at the rear and on one side, a chimney at the western end and a verandah across the front. Paddock stone has been used at the chimney end and the eastern addition. Its interior walls are constructed from pit-sawn blackwood.

The cottage was purchased from Alexander Cameron by storekeeper Alan C Coleman in 1861 and then by licensed Prince of Wales Hotel victualler, Albert J Edwards in 1864. He was the owner until 1879, followed by his wife Catherine J Edwards until late 1882.

The building was placed on the National Trust Recorded List and confirmed as a State Heritage Place on the SA Heritage Register in 1984.

It was used as a residence, offices and for bed and breakfast accommodation until purchased by the District Council of Penola, later Wattle Range Council, which donated it to the Penola Branch of the National Trust of SA in 2017.

It is once again leased as a bed and breakfast venue.
